Overview

Pike-Only Matches and Lure-Only Matches

Weston Angling Association has always looked for ways to offer more variety and opportunities for anglers of all levels. That’s why we’ve introduced Pike-Only Matches and Lure-Only Matches into our calendar — making us, as far as we’re aware, the only club in Somerset to run these specialist competitions.

Unlike traditional coarse matches, which focus on roach, bream, and skimmers, predator matches bring a fresh challenge. They’re about lure presentation, watercraft, patience, and handling powerful fish safely. Every event is designed with fish welfare in mind, ensuring pike are respected and returned quickly to the water.

Why Pike & Lure Matches Are Different

  • Pike-Only Matches – Anglers target one of the most iconic predators in our waters. Competitors can use deadbaits or lures, with results measured by fish length or a points system.
  • Lure-Only Matches – Action-packed and mobile, these matches rely solely on artificial lures. It’s a fast-paced, catch-and-release format that appeals to anglers who like an active style of fishing.

What makes these matches stand out is not just the fishing, but the community spirit around them. Whether you’re new to predator angling or a seasoned lure specialist, you’ll find encouragement, support, and plenty of banter on the bank.

Tackle & Safety Guidelines

To ensure both fair competition and fish welfare, all entrants are expected to follow safe predator fishing practice:

  • Rods & Reels – 2.5–3 lb test curve rods, strong fixed spool reels.
  • Line & Traces – Minimum 12–15 lb mainline and wire traces.
  • Essential Tools – Large landing net, unhooking mat, forceps or long-nose pliers.
  • Hooks – Barbless or semi-barbed trebles for safe unhooking.

All fish must be handled carefully and released immediately after measuring.

Why Weston Angling Association is Unique

Pike and Lure Matches

As far as we know, no other club in Somerset currently offers Pike-Only or Lure-Only matches. This makes Weston Angling Association a regional leader in providing opportunities for predator anglers.

We believe in catering for all anglers — from juniors learning on Summer Lane, to adults in silver fish matches, to pike specialists chasing their next big fish. Our match programme reflects this inclusivity and variety.
