Why Weston Angling Association is Leading
the Way with Pike-Only and Lure Matches
When it comes to fishing matches in Somerset, most clubs stick to traditional coarse competitions — nets of roach, bream, and perch are usually the focus. But at Weston Angling Association, we’ve decided to do things a little differently. As far as we know, we are the only club in the Somerset area running dedicated Pike-Only Matches and Lure-Only Matches — and it’s something we’re really proud of.
Breaking the Mold of Traditional Matches
For many anglers, matches are about silvers on the pole or bream on the feeder. And while those formats are great fun, we recognised that predator anglers didn’t have the same opportunities to compete in a fair and structured way. That’s why we introduced Pike-Only and Lure Matches into our calendar.
These events are carefully organised with safety and fish welfare at the heart of everything we do. Competitors use appropriate tackle, barbless or semi-barbed trebles, unhooking mats, and forceps — ensuring every pike is handled with care before being released safely back into the water.
Why Pike and Lure Matches are Different
Unlike weight-based coarse matches, predator competitions often use longest fish or points systems to make sure everyone has a fair chance. This creates a fresh challenge for anglers, where skill in lure presentation, watercraft, and patience are just as important as luck.
- Pike-Only Matches – Anglers target one of the river’s most iconic predators. It’s about reading the water, choosing the right deadbait or lure, and handling these powerful fish responsibly.
- Lure Matches – A fast-paced, exciting format where anglers rely solely on artificial lures. It’s catch-and-release, action-packed, and perfect for those who enjoy an active style of fishing.
Why Weston Angling Association is Unique
As far as we’re aware, no other angling club in Somerset currently offers these dedicated formats. That makes us unique — and it’s something our members really value. We’re giving predator anglers a chance to compete on equal terms while promoting safe and responsible pike fishing.
It also reflects our wider approach as a club: we want to cater for all types of anglers. From juniors catching their first roach, to match anglers filling keepnets with silvers, to predator specialists chasing their next big pike — we aim to provide opportunities for everyone.
More Than Just a Match
What makes these matches so popular isn’t just the fishing — it’s the community around them. There’s always plenty of banter on the bank, encouragement for newcomers, and a sense of pride in running something different that brings anglers together.
For some, it’s their first experience of competitive pike fishing. For others, it’s a chance to refine their lure techniques against like-minded anglers. Whatever your level of experience, you’ll find a warm welcome at our predator events.
